Old City

Philadelphia's most eclectic shopping corridor runs for six blocks through one of the city's most culturally vibrant neighborhoods. Vintage clothing, independent record stores, tattoo studios, galleries, and one-of-a-kind boutiques define a street that's been countercultural since the 1960s.

Shopping in Old City

Old City is Philadelphia's oldest neighborhood — the streets here date to the 1680s, and many of the cobblestone blocks look largely as they did in colonial times. But Old City is far from a museum. It's one of the most dynamic shopping districts in the city, with art galleries, independent boutiques, and design studios tucked into restored warehouses and 18th-century row houses.

The main shopping stretch runs along 2nd and 3rd Streets between Market and Arch, with overflow into the quieter blocks north of Race. The district is compact and walkable — you can hit every shop on this guide in a half-day, and most are a five-minute walk from each other.

What Makes It Special

What makes Old City special is its mix. A contemporary furniture gallery sits next to a 200-year-old tavern. A plant shop shares a block with a design studio. A craft boutique is across the street from one of the city's best fine-dining restaurants. It's a working creative neighborhood, not a tourist trap.

💡 First Friday

The first Friday of every month, Old City's galleries and many shops stay open late (usually until 9pm) and host free openings with wine and refreshments. It's Philadelphia's biggest monthly cultural event and the best time to experience the neighborhood at full energy.

Getting Around

Old City is one of the most transit-accessible neighborhoods in the city. The 2nd Street Station on the Market-Frankford Line drops you in the center of the shopping district. By car, multiple parking garages are scattered throughout — the Old City Garage at 2nd and Sansom is the most central.

Historic Stops

Old City is home to Independence Hall, the Liberty Bell, and Elfreth's Alley (the oldest continuously inhabited residential street in America). Pair your shopping with a quick historic walking tour — most sites are free and take 15–30 minutes each.
