Where Temple and Penn Students Actually Shop

Temple and Penn are about six miles apart, but their students share a lot: tight budgets, tiny rooms, and a city that rewards anyone willing to ride the subway. Whether you're on North Broad or in West Philly, the best student shopping isn't on your campus block. It's a short ride away, and this guide sticks to places we can vouch for.

It's mid-October, which means midterms, the first real cold snaps, and Halloween two and a half weeks out. The summer wardrobe is done, the dorm still needs things, and the costume question is coming. We've organized the guide by what you actually need: cheap basics, thrift finds, and food worth the trip.

Market Street's Fashion District is the easiest big-box run from either campus.

The Market Street Basics Run

For a one-stop refresh, head to the Fashion District along Market Street. Primark and H&M share the 901 Market St address, which makes them an efficient first stop for basics, layers, and the sweaters you'll need before November. Next door, Burlington Coat Factory at 925 Market St is the place to look for a proper winter coat before the first real cold snap makes everyone panic-buy at once.

From Temple, take the Broad Street Line to City Hall and walk east on Market. From Penn, the Market-Frankford Line runs straight down Market Street to the 8th Street stop. Either way, you can be shopping in under half an hour.

Do the Coat Run Early

Don't wait for the first freezing morning to buy outerwear. Go on a weekday afternoon between classes, when Market Street is calmer than on weekends, and try things on over a hoodie so you buy a coat that fits your actual winter layers.

Thrift, Vinyl, and the South Street Detour

Thrifting is where a student budget stretches furthest. Philly AIDS Thrift @ Giovanni's Room at 345 S 12th St is an easy walk from Center City and a good place to dig for jackets, flannels, and odd furniture-adjacent finds. Penn students can get there on foot or a short ride east, and Temple students can take the Broad Street Line south and walk over.

Keep going toward South Street and you hit Repo Records at 506 South St, a good stop if you're building a record collection or hunting for a gift for the friend who has everything. South Street can be touristy on weekends, but this block is still a good afternoon wander.

Cheap Eats Between Shopping Stops

Every shopping trip needs a food stop. On South Street, Famous 4th Street Delicatessen at 700 S 4th St carries a Michelin Bib Gourmand, so it's a reliable pick when you want a real sit-down meal that still respects your wallet. Bring a friend and split the work of deciding what to order.

If you're downtown instead, DiNic's Roast Pork inside Reading Terminal Market is a classic Philly sandwich stop, and the market is easy to reach from Market Street. It's a good place to refuel after you've dragged shopping bags through the Fashion District.

Combine Your Errands

Plan one big loop instead of three small trips. Start at the Fashion District, walk to Reading Terminal for lunch, then head south to the thrift and record stops. You'll spend less on transit and avoid the end-of-semester crush.

Beyond the Usual Districts

A few spots are worth leaving the student corridors for. All three are in our verified listings, and each rewards a longer trip.

Worth the Trip: Antique Row
Halloween · 1329 Pine St

With Halloween around the corner, this is the right neighborhood for a costume hunt. It's a very different outing from the chain stores on Market Street, and it's close enough to Rittenhouse and Washington Square that you can build a full afternoon around it.

Worth the Trip: Fishtown
Philadelphia Record Exchange · 1524 Frankford Ave

Fishtown's main drag is a good stop for anyone who likes browsing records. Pair it with a visit to Circle Thrift at 2233 Frankford Ave and you've got a full thrift-and-vinyl afternoon in one neighborhood.

Worth the Trip: Reading Terminal
Beiler's Bakery · Reading Terminal Market

This bakery stall is a good study-break reward or a gift for a roommate after a rough week. Go with a friend and share a few things.
